Shih Tzu health care is much the same as other breeds, but there are a few breed definite problems to watch. Of procedure nearly every breed has its own problems. Thankfully, these dogs have very few special problems. Don't ignore the few problems though. The following areas are where you legitimately need to be specific with your pup.
The Eye Problems -- A few eye problems are connected with the Shih Tzu's short-face. Since their eyes are generally large and round, injures are quite common. Watch for any signs of problems, like the eye tearing or watering excessively. In windy, or cold conditions, the cornea of the eye can come to be inflamed. This can lead to painful corneal ulceration.
Epiphora -- Epiphora, called "wet eye," is an abnormal extra flow of tears. Watch for staining of the hair down the face. It can be the corollary of exposure or poor drainage by the tear duct. Someone else cause may be "dry eye" due to loss of the protective tear film. A coarse cause of wet eye is irritation from the long hair on top of their head. This can fall into their eyes and cause irritation. Tying it back with a bow or elastic hair tie legitimately solves that one.
Breathing Problems -- Sometimes short nose breeds have lots of breathing problems. That's not generally true with the Shih Tzu, but be on the guard for any signs of difficulty with breathing. As with any problems, consult a vet if you calculate a problem.
