The Shih Tzu has a long and rich history, the breed is probably of Tibet origin. Made to look like a small size version of the lion dog which was favored by Buddhist, the Shih Tzu was especially favored by Chinese emperors. For many generations the breeding of this dog was spread from generation to generation of Emperors. Until it was eventually exported west but, the dog did not reach American soil until the 1940's where it swiftly caught favor with the fancy because of its unique attractiveness and temperament.
The word Shih Tzu means lion and although the are not of feline origin they share many qualities with the feline species.
